Someone will be waiting for you at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport the moment you step out. From there, the drive to Gangtok is your first proper introduction to the Northeast — winding mountain roads, rivers running below, and air that already smells different.

Check into your hotel, drop your bags, and do nothing for a bit. You've earned it. Later in the evening, walk down to MG Marg. It's Gangtok's heartbeat — lit up, buzzing, and surprisingly easy to fall in love with on day one.

Breakfast early, then out the door. The road to Tsomgo Lake climbs steadily through army checkposts and alpine pine, and when the lake finally comes into view — frozen blue-green, ringed by steep slopes — it's the kind of moment that makes the early start worth it.

From there, continue to Baba Mandir, a shrine that sits at over 13,000 feet and carries a story that locals will tell you with absolute conviction. Whether you're religious or not, the place has a stillness that's hard to explain.

If you'd like to push further to Nathula Pass (the old Silk Route border crossing with China), that can be arranged at an extra cost — though it's only open to Indian nationals through registered agencies, and permits depend on weather and availability. Worth asking about.

Note: If Tsomgo Lake is closed due to landslides or restrictions, alternate sightseeing will be arranged. Permits are required for all three sites.

Overnight in Gangtok.

Check out after breakfast and head north. The landscape starts changing almost immediately — the valley deepens, the road narrows, and the towns get smaller and quieter.

Stop at Naga Waterfall along the way, and don't miss the confluence at Chungthang, where the Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu rivers meet. It's not a tourist attraction, exactly — just one of those natural moments that catches you off guard.

Lachen is a small, unhurried village. Dinner is served at the hotel, and by 9 PM the place is mostly silent. Sleep well — tomorrow is a big day.

This one starts before sunrise. Gurudongmar Lake sits at roughly 17,000 feet and is one of the highest lakes in the world accessible by road. The drive up is cold and stark and beautiful in a way that photographs don't quite capture. The lake itself — sacred to both Buddhists and Sikhs — is often partially frozen even in warmer months.

Return to Lachen for lunch, then continue to Lachung. If you want to add Chopta Valley and Kala Patthar to the day, it's possible at an extra cost, subject to road conditions and permits.

Yumthang — the Valley of Flowers — is best in the morning, before the clouds roll in. In spring, rhododendrons cover the hillsides in every shade of red and pink. Even outside the bloom season, the valley is wide and open and quietly spectacular.

On the way back, stop at the hot springs. Then lunch at the hotel before the long drive south to Gangtok. If visibility cooperates, you'll catch glimpses of the Kanchenjunga range as you descend.

Zero Point (Yumesamdong) and Katao can be added at extra cost, weather and permits allowing. Both are worth it if you have the time and the lungs for altitude.

Today is a transfer day, but a well-routed one. Rather than a straight shot to Pelling, the drive cuts through South Sikkim and stops at two genuinely impressive landmarks.

First, Namchi Chardham — a religious complex built on a hilltop with replicas of India's four dhams and a towering Shiva statue. Then, Ravangla Buddha Park, where a massive Buddha statue looks out over forested ridges with a calm that's oddly contagious.

Arrive in Pelling by evening. Check in, settle in, and look out the window if the weather is clear — Kanchenjunga has a habit of appearing right there, closer than it should feel.

Pelling is the kind of town that rewards a full day. After breakfast, the circuit covers quite a bit of ground — Sky Walk (a glass-floored bridge with views that will either thrill or terrify you), the atmospheric ruins of Rabdentse, Pemayangtse Monastery with its extraordinary seven-tiered wooden model of a celestial palace inside, Orange Garden, Rimbi Waterfalls, the serene Khecheopalri Lake, and Kanchenjunga Waterfalls.

It's a lot, but Pelling is compact enough that it doesn't feel rushed. The monastery alone is worth an unhurried hour.

The drive to Darjeeling crosses into West Bengal and the landscape shifts — tea estates appear, the air gets heavier, and the towns feel more colonial than Himalayan. Check in, get your bearings, and let the afternoon be unstructured.

The Mall Road market is worth a slow evening walk. If you want to try the toy train — the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway — this is a good evening to ask about schedules and book a joy ride at your own cost.

The alarm goes off well before dawn. Tiger Hill, at 8,482 feet, is where people gather in the dark to watch the sun hit Kanchenjunga and, on a clear day, even Everest on the distant horizon. It earns the early wake-up.

On the way back, stop at Batasia Loop — a spiral railway track built into the hillside — and Ghoom Monastery, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region.

After breakfast, the rest of Darjeeling unfolds at a more relaxed pace: Padmaja Naidu Zoo (known for its red pandas and snow leopards), the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the ropeway over the valley, Japanese Temple, Peace Pagoda, a tea garden viewpoint, and Tenzing Rock — the practice boulder where Tenzing Norgay trained before Everest.

Overnight in Darjeeling.

Breakfast, check out, and the drive down to the plains. Ten days, and you've covered glacial lakes above 17,000 feet, ancient monasteries, rhododendron valleys, a colonial-era mountain railway, and one of the most scenically loaded road trips in India.
