Your journey into Sikkim begins the moment you step out at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport, where your driver will be watching for your arrival. The road to Gangtok runs alongside the Teesta River for much of the way, through a stretch of Northeast India that feels greener and quieter with every passing kilometre. Plan for 4 to 5 hours on the road, depending on traffic at the border checkpost. Once you arrive and check in, the rest of the day is unhurried. Come evening, step out to MG Marg, Gangtok’s pedestrian-only main street, where the town gathers to eat, shop, and simply be. It is a good introduction to how Sikkim moves. Pack light for the next two nights. After breakfast and checkout, you head north on a drive that takes anywhere between 6 and 7 hours, and the scenery earns every minute of it. The road passes through Chungthang, a small town sitting right at the point where two rivers, the Lachen Chu and the Lachung Chu, come together before continuing as one. It is one of those spots you stop at not because it is on a list, but because you simply cannot drive past it. Naga Waterfall is another natural pause along the way.

By the time you reach Lachen, the air has changed and so has the pace. This is a village that has not been overrun, and it shows. Have dinner, rest up, and keep your alarm early. Tomorrow’s excursion does not wait.

You will be on the road by 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, well before daylight fully settles in. The route climbs through Thangu, a high-altitude valley where yaks wander across open grassland, and then continues higher into terrain that feels progressively more elemental: bare rock, glacial debris, and sky.
Gurudongmar Lake appears at 5,425 m, and nothing in a brochure quite conveys what it actually looks like. The water is a vivid blue-green and the surrounding peaks are close and white. The air is genuinely thin at this altitude, so move carefully, breathe steadily, and do not try to do too much. The lake holds deep spiritual significance across Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh traditions, and there is something about the place that makes that very easy to believe.

After returning to Lachen for lunch, the afternoon drive takes you to Lachung, roughly 2 to 3 hours away. Tucked into a steeper, narrower valley than Lachen, Lachung feels like the kind of village that exists at the edge of the known world.

Breakfast early, then out to Yumthang Valley, about 24 km from your hotel and a little under two hours by road. The valley opens up at 3,597 m into something that rewards the effort of getting here. The treeline drops away and what takes its place are wide meadows, a river cutting through the middle, and rhododendron stands that, between March and May, put on one of the finest flower shows in the Himalayas. Outside of spring, the scale and the silence do the work instead.

On the way back down, stop at the natural hot springs near the valley entrance. They are geothermal, slightly sulphurous, and after a morning at altitude, genuinely welcome.

Return to Lachung for lunch, then begin the long drive back to Gangtok, 5 to 6 hours on mountain roads. Somewhere between Singhik and Mangan, if the sky is holding clear, pull over. Mt. Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain on earth, fills the view in a way that is hard to walk away from.

After breakfast, the day takes you east. The road toward Tsomgo Lake passes through the Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary, where rhododendron forest lines both sides and the red panda and blood pheasant make their home among the trees. Tsomgo Lake sits at 3,780 m and is oval in shape, roughly a kilometre from one end to the other. It is a glacial lake, fed by snowmelt, and its surface shifts in character across the seasons: frozen and snow-flanked in winter, clear and flower-edged in the warmer months. The Sikkimese have regarded it as sacred for a very long time, and you can understand why.

From the lake, the road climbs another 243 m or so to Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir. The story behind it is straightforward and not straightforward at all: an Indian Army soldier who died in the 1960s is believed by his regiment, and by the people of the region, to never have truly left his post. The mandir built in his memory is small and unpretentious, but the faith in it is not.

Note: Nathula Pass (4,310 m) on the Indo-China border can be added at a variable supplement cost. Permits are issued Wednesday through Sunday only and are never guaranteed in advance due to security and weather considerations. Should Tsomgo Lake be inaccessible on the day due to landslide or any other reason, alternate sightseeing within the region will be arranged.

A proper breakfast before you go. Then it is back down to the plains, 4 to 5 hours to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. Factor in the driving time when planning your train or flight, and start earlier rather than later. The Teesta Valley looks different on the way out, as it always does after you have been higher up.
